Conceived as an experiment by artistic director Kees Lesuis for the 2017 Oerol Festival, LOUD SHADOWS | LIQUID EVENTS assembles a group of artists from disciplines ranging from dance to music and architecture. This site-specific installation is a unique performance whose stages are both monumental and light, opaque and transparent. The installation’s exotic skin caresses the surrounding forest and offers a clear view outwards, creating a magical setting in which dance, music, and nature merge to challenge our perception
The four different stages of the installation are designed with careful consideration of the position of each single tree in the Formerum forest on the island of Terschelling. Each scenario is integrated into its environment, creating a unique set that blurs the boundaries between art, audience, and nature. The first stage is a transparent sphere, pierced by a tree, while the milky one is squeezed between tree branches and illuminated by the projections of their shadows. A ring looping around pine and oak trees connects the first two stages and creates a third in the void between them. The fourth and final stage is the surrounding forest itself.
In this multisensory landscape, members of the audience are free to move around the different stages and choose their own perspectives. Nature itself plays an essential role in these performances with its singing birds, rustling leaves, gusts of wind and raindrops. As musicians from The Stolz play and dancers from LeineRoebana perform simultaneously on different stages, Kate Moore’s composition is affected by the unpredictable natural elements of the forest, making each performance a unique experience.
