우리는 태어나서 죽기 전까지 단 한 순간도 호흡을 하지 않는 적이 없지만, 살면서 숨 쉬는 일에만 온전히 주의를 기울이는 일은 거의 없다. 호흡 명상을 통해 들숨과 날숨을 반복하는 동안 자신의 감각과 신체의 변화를 유심히 관찰하는 일은 ‘지금 여기 나'에 집중하게 함으로써 존재의 행복과 충일감을 경험케 한다.
플라스티크 판타스티크와 마르코 바로티가 협업한 작품 “숨 쉬는 공간"은 역동적인 구조와 몰입형 사운드 디자인을 결합한 움직이는 인스톨레이션으로, 호흡의 양상을 신체 바깥에서 경험하고 관찰하게 하는 작품이다. 동시에 움직이는 네 대의 환풍기가 인간의 폐 활동 법칙에 맞춰 사운드 매트릭스의 역학을 조정하고 벽체의 움직임을 유도한다. 작품 내부에 숨겨진 서브 우퍼들이 뿜어내는 베이스 주파수는 이 거대한 유기체의 영혼이 된다. 들숨과 날숨에 따라 부풀고 줄어들기를 반복하는 희고 거대한 폐부 사이에서, 우리는 살아 있는 존재만이 가진 ‘생'의 리듬을 확인하며 공간과 함께 호흡하게 된다.

From the moment we are born until we pass on, we never stop breathing, yet rarely in our lives do we focus our attention purely on breathing. As we practice breathing meditation, mindfully observing the changes in our perceptions and body as we repeatedly breathe in and out, we come to focus on ourselves “here and now” and experience happiness and abundance as beings.

BREATHING VOLUME is an installation that combines dynamic architecture and immersive sound design. It plays with the notion of space within an audio-visual context. Upon entering, visitors are embraced by the installation’s breathing walls, which continuously expand, contract and change their physical volume over five-minute intervals to mimic the sensation of being inside a living organism. Four synchronised ventilators trigger the dynamics of the sound matrix and the movement of the walls by following the canon of human lungs. Subwoofers placed in the interior transform the pulsing bass frequencies into the soul of the organism. BREATHING VOLUME unexpectedly steers the focus from what surrounds us to what is immediate, here and now, offering a distorted reflection on our relationship with space, its distance and extension.
